Roasted, unmalted barley grain has a full, roasted aroma. Excellent for stouts and other dark beers.

Black grains are often misunderstood so here's a quick explanation. "Roasted" Barley is kiln roasted to dark color without ever being malted. That is, it is not malt at all but just raw roasted barley. It is the quintessential character of stout beers, especially dry Irish stouts. It brings a lot of rich coffee notes and tastes slightly burnt. It also tints the beer's head tan. On the other hand, malsters also make a similarly colored grain called Black MALT or Black Patent MALT. The major difference is that the barley is first malted, then roasted. While Black Malt is often used in stouts as well, it tends to bring a bit more dark chocolate flavors and it doesn't tint the head as much.

This confusion is taken even further due to the fact that Briess has two different versions of roasted barley. The one they call roasted barley is a slightly lighter kilned version while they also have a version called Black Barley (the grain you're browsing right now). It is still an unmalted roasted barley but it's taken to a very dark 550 Lovibond. Briess also has Black Malt and that's a different thing as discussed above.

Grain is now offered in either pounds or ounces to better accommodate customer needs. Please pay attention to which item you are ordering and select your quantity appropriately. Remember, there are 16 ounces in a pound. Note that 16 x 1 ounces will cost you slightly more than 1 x 1 pound.
