Description

Our step bits are great for drilling a bunch of different hole sizes, but you do have to drill for a while because you're making a bunch of holes, larger and larger. These new Tungsten Carbide tipped hole saws make fast work through stainless. The only downside is that you need a different bit for every hole size. If you are going to drill several holes of the same size, you'll appreciate the speed and durability of these types of bits.

This 40 mm bit is also equivalent to 1-5/8" which is appropriate for installing our 1.5" Weldless Triclover Bulkhead. You'll need a slow speed, high torque drill motor for these with a 1/2" or larger chuck. It is highly recommended that you start ANY size hole with a smaller pilot bit approximately 1/8" and drill a couple test holes in scrap metal to get the hang of using these bits. They cut aggressively and you will need to learn the appropriate amount of downforce and speed to use. When the cut is nearing completion, the drill will have a tendency to buck on you so make sure the pot and the drill are being held firmly. An extra set of hands is recommended. Everyone in the area should be wearing eye protection.

Apply cutting oil to the area before drilling or at the very least use ANY oil you have access to.

NOTE: These bits are recommended for users that have a reasonable/intermediate level of DIY experience with power tools and/or metal working in general. Keep in mind that when the larger hole boring section of this bit hits your pot wall, it is going to cause your drill motor to kick in your hands. Do not attempt to hold the drill with one hand. Firmly grip your drill with both hands and prop the handle against your leg and tense up for additional stability. If the drill bit binds at all and causes the drill to kick and you do not secure it, you will likely break one or more of the carbide tips off of the bit. We will NOT replace a drill bit with broken tips because it does not represent a defect in workmanship. You've heard a lot about using the right tool for the job, but this is one of those cases where we have to stress having a certain ability for the tool. This is especially true for the 32mm size and UP.

5 of 5 Tungsten Carb Hole Saw Works well May 31, 2023
Reviewer: Bryan Miller from Pittsburgh, PA United States
I was skeptical about a whole saw for going through the side of a standard 1/2 barrel sanke keg.  I also made things more difficult for myself by punching a 1” hole first (thinking I would use a 40.5mm punch with 3/4” draw stud - turns out, that tool/die can’t be sourced anywhere and would be almost $300 if it could actually be bought).  The whole saw worked surprisingly well.  I got three nice clean holes in my keggle, installed three weldless bulkhead fittings with no leaks.  I’m very happy with the tool.

5 of 5 Nice robust hole saw February 16, 2022

Yes the math doesn't seem right at first glance (40mm=1.57"), but the idea is that after a little deburring with a file you'll have an appropriately sized hole for the 1-1/2" weldless bulkhead.  The teeth are sharp and cut in well, and are likely to grab as they get through so stay slow.

Pretty straightforward.
Insert into drill.  Line up with desired hole location.  Run drill at LOW speed.  Make hole. Done.

Used this after my pilot hole was made.   Watching your video a few times gave me the confidence to take a shot.  It worked well, and I am excited to be one step closer to slaying steam!

5 of 5 Wow! Buy this! It will do the job! June 27, 2020

I used this to drill holes on two kettles to install TRUE Weldless 1.5" TC Triclamp Bulkhead. It worked perfectly! I recommend using cutting oil (and re-applying as needed)… slow and steady & starting with a center punch did the trick. I was impressed with how it cut through the kettle wall!
