This kit will turn a 10 gallon round cooler into mash tun using all stainless high flow components.
The parts included in this kit are:
- 12" domed stainless steel false bottom with our upgrade large ID connection elbow.
- 6" of 1/2" ID silicone tubing
- One-piece machined bulkhead with interior high flow hose barb (Model: TrueBulkheadBarb)
- 2pc Ball valve (upgradable to 3pc at time of order via listed accessory on the right)
- Note, this kit does NOT include a hose barb or camlock type F for the output side of the valve as shown in the pictures. Please select a hose connection fitting from the accessory list on the right.
Note: COOLER NOT INCLUDED! (if you want to buy a fully converted cooler, look for product ID: MashTunCoolerFB1)
What makes our kit different than the competition? Ugh, now we have to brag just a little. The bulkhead we include in this kit is custom machined out of hex bar stock to our exact specifications making it extremely simple to install and leak free from day one. It's not a bunch of off the shelf parts made with half a roll of teflon tape. We also use a high flow elbow connector at the false bottom which also features a custom made smooth bore retainer. Long story short, we've held off on offering cooler false bottom kits for a long time until we had all the high end components described here.
Install Requirements: Bulkhead/Drain:
Remove the stock spigot from the cooler. Remove the locknut and metal washer from the TrueBulkhead bulkhead leaving the red oring in place. Insert through the hole in the cooler from the inside. Install the metal washer and locknut on the outside. Holding the interior hex with one of the points facing upwards, tighten the exterior locknut nice and snug. Apply teflon tape on the exterior threads and thread ball valve on. Note: The oring that comes preinstalled on the bulkhead is excellent for drain holes closer to 13/16" which is a close fit on the male threads. If the hole in your cooler is 7/8" or even up to 1" in diameter such as in the Rubbermaid brand coolers, the use of a larger flat gasket is necessary. When you select the Rubbermaid cooler in the drop down, we will send the flat gasket.
NOTE: Although the use of the included flat gasket will seal over the larger holes in the Rubbermaid/Home Depot coolers, it is not as ideal as an install in an IGLOO cooler. If you haven't already modified your Rubbermaid cooler and can return it, we highly recommend doing so. Install in an Igloo is very easy and the native captured oring design of the truebulkhead is superior to the flat gasket workaround. It also seems that the latest lot of coolers Rubbermaid is making has an even larger hole than before (some customers report a touch over 1"). Don't be lazy about this one, you'll be much happier over the long term if you go get that Igloo cooler now.
The
seal and locknut assembly is completely separate from the ball valve
attachment. You will see a section of threads between the nut and ball
valve and this is normal.
False Bottom:
Lay the false bottom down inside your cooler and get it generally centered with the barbed side of the fitting facing toward your bulkhead. Measure the distance between the two barbs and include the length of the barbs also. Cut a piece of the included 1/2" ID silicone tubing and push it over both barbs. As long as you don't cut the tubing too short, you should have a snug enough fit that hose clamps are not required. Of course, if you use a gorilla as a mash paddle wielding assistant, you may want to use hose clamps to keep from disconnecting the tubing in the middle of the brew day.
