Description

This is a team building or social type of event, with an educational edge. You and some of your friends or colleagues are interested in how home brewing works. We'll basically take our Beginner Homebrewing Workshop class on the road and bring it to you.

Purpose:
To give participants a general understanding of the homebrewing process using malt extracts.

Content:
This is a demonstration/workshop style class with an ongoing Q&A dialog. This session will walk you through the brew day process and we will also demonstrate tasks that occur at later times in the process such as transferring and bottling.

Logistics:
We will bring an outdoor propane burner, propane tank, and boil kettle. The fee for this class covers the use of the aforementioned equipment, instructor's time on site (approximately 3 hours), and up to 1 hour of total round trip travel time. The customer/host will also need to purchase the beginner equipment kit (approximately $99) and a recipe/ingredient kit ($40-60 depending on the beer style), and two empty cases of 12oz beer bottles (approximately $29). If the customer decides to continue homebrewing in the future, they will only need to buy new ingredient kits to do so.

It is acceptable to set up the session outdoors on a hard patio or driveway, in a clean garage with the roll up door wide open, or in the commercial kitchen space (we use the stove in that case). A garden hose needs to be accessible to the location. The host will keep the fermenter full of beer after the class.

It is recommended that the customer/host schedule a bottling party 3 weeks after the brew day (plus or minus a week is OK). We will instruct and demonstrate the bottling process during the brewing day class but we will not normally return to facilitate the bottling process. It is relatively straight forward. It is encouraged to send participants home with some of the bottled beer (there will be about 48 bottles).

The quoted fee covers up to 8 participants including the host. Any more than that usually gets a little crowded and if you're sharing the beer, everyone would get a six pack.

Typical questions answered:
  • What is Beer?
  • Is it legal?
  • How long does it take?
  • What kind of equipment do you need?
  • How much does it cost (upfront, ongoing)?
  • How is the style of beer affected by ingredients?
  • What determines the strength (alcohol percentage)?
  • What is the basic process and timeline from brewing to drinking?
  • How do you transfer beer between containers
  • How do you package beer and what types of containers are suitable?
In summary, these are all questions that a walk-in customer would typically ask as they browse the store assuming they have no previous brewing experience. It is our intention to refer those customers to this class so that they can get all the answers along with their peers when the shop is quiet and they have our undivided attention.

Schedule:
This is a book as needed class. Call us to discuss availability.

Policy:
The class is refundable up to a week prior to the agreed upon class date. After that deadline, cancelations will result in store credit. We allow for up to one reschedule if alerted to a conflict at least a week prior. We can proceed in the case of mild rainy weather if the session was going to be outside as long as some overhead cover is provided (pop up tent for example).
