Having brewed with a generous handful of cheap digital thermometers, we've learned to be very skeptical of performance claims of the manufacturers. Whenever the topic of "the best digital thermometer" comes up on the forums, the answer is always the "thermapen". It is a very nice thermometer for $94, but most people find it to be a luxury item. It's also not waterproof so you'll turn it into an expensive paperweight if you drop it into your boil kettle. Since the thermapen is so respected, we bought one to compare at least 10 competing budget options. Most of them were so bad, that we wrote them off immediately.
