Silicone tubing is a little pricy compared to the clear PVC tubing you'll find at the home centers, but it's worth it when you contrast their features. At hot temperatures, clear PVC tubing will leech plasticizers into the liquid and make your brew taste like plastic. PVC also softens up quite a bit with heat. Our silicone tubing is extruded in the U.S. using 100% Dow base silicone and is FDA approved for food contact up to 500F. it also happens to be some of the clearest silicone tubing you'll find so you'll still be able to see your wort flowing.
We used to stock this tubing with 1/8" thick walls but found that it was unnecessarily thick for the smaller ID. We thinned out the walls to make it easier to work with especially for use in racking and peristaltic pumps. In case 3/32" wall thickness is hard to visualize, it's exactly half way between 1/16" and 1/8".
This is 3/8 ID version of the tubing but we stock the larger and more appropriate 1/2" ID for pump use elsewhere on the site.
If you're price shopping, always pay attention to where the tubing is made. This particular one is extruded in the U.S. We stand behind our product because we literally pick up our product at the extruder and know where the raw materials come from.
Warning: Do NOT leave silicone tubing soaking in Star San sanitizer for more than a few hours at a time. Long term soaking, such as several days to a week, can cause silicone to get brittle.
