We've offered our classic West Coast IPA recipe for at least 6 years now and one of the most common requests we have is to scale it up to a more hearty ABV. Instead of continuing that modification on the fly, we finally got our act together and made this big ol' double IPA. The West Coast Magnitude is a very big 9-10% ABV double IPA at the upper limit of the double IPA style, knocking at the door of an American Barleywine (there's no real style called TRIPLE IPA got it?).

Careful though, this isn't the modern hazy juicy double IPA you're finding at the local watering hole. This is much more reminiscent of Pliney or Double Barrel, AKA your West Coast double IPAs that became popular at the turn of the 21st century. Firm bitterness, calculated well over the theoretical maximum of 100 IBUs with a neutral malt backbone will get your weekend started right. A rather generous variety of hop varietals including both standard pellet as well as cryo hops lend flavors and aromas of stonefruit, grapefruit, pine, and dank earthy citrus.


This beer will do well with either a couple packs of US-05 dry yeast or a direct pitch of 3 packs Omega West Coast OYL-004 or White Labs WLP001. Of course buying three packs of liquid yeast gets very expensive so it's much more practical to make a 2 liter starter and inoculate that with a single pack of liquid yeast. If it's too much trouble for you, go with the two packs of dry yeast instead. Select your preferred yeast as an add on in the accessory list on the right, just be sure to increase the quantity if necessary once it's in the cart. If you plan to bottle condition, be sure you have 4 ounces of priming sugar. You can purchase that as an accessory as well.

For emphasis: This kit does not include yeast, it must be selected from the accessories list on the right.

*Note that the recipe file included will be included as either a BIAB process or a sparged process. Since BIAB efficiency is generally lower, we have the batch size set to 5.5 into the fermenter while the sparged version assumes 6 gallons. This slight batch size adjustment generally keeps the target gravity relatively consistent. Feel free to adjust your actual batch once you measure your pre-boil gravity. If you're over on preboil gravity, you can dilute with a bit of water. If you're a bit under, you can add a little table sugar into the boil.
